This is a beautiful mid-nineties Peavey RBS-1 set. The drums have a gorgeous matte natural finish which I believe was called Light Maple. They come from that great period in the nineties when companies got really serious about designing perfect drums, and the bridge system on these drums is amazing. The drums tune up easily, have a wide-tuning range, and are uncommonly bright, resonant, warm, sensitive, and loud! The natural finish really shows off the craftsmanship. The bass really thumps and the snare, which has an exceptionally thick shell, has a warmth and crack I’ve never encountered in another snare. Overall, I’d rate the condition of the finish at an 8.5. The 10 tom and snare are 9’s–they just have a few superficial scratches, scrapes, or dings that are barely noticeable and would probably disappear with some Pledge. The 12″, 14″, and 16 toms are 8s. The 12″ and 14″ have a ding each that are not major but are visible from 10′ away, and the 16 has two and a scrape on the bottom bridge. I’ve included pictures. The bass drum is more of a 7.5. The batter hoop has pedal rash, and both bridges have a few scrapes and tom gouges. None of the scrapes are visible from offstage and there are no structural problems, but you’ll see them. You can see evidence of the shells darkening over time underneath the bass claws. Because the shells are basically raw with just a light oil finish, you could probably sand out most of the issues. None of the issues are beyond what one would expect from a 20+ year-old set that was decently cared for. I’d rate the chrome at a 9 out of 10. I polished it the other day and it gleams, but there is some minor pitting. One snare rod is not original. The high tom has the original Pearl-style mount attached to the RIMS system, but the other toms have been upgraded to Gibraltar Super Clamps. No stands are included–I just used them to display the drums in the pictures. I have greased all the tension sleeves with white lithium grease. The resonant heads on the toms and bass are the original Peavey heads, and they have seen a lot of wear. The batter heads on the toms are Remo Pinstripes, and the bass has a Pinstripe Powerstroke 3. They have also seen some use. The snare has a clear Ambassador snare side and a coated Ambassador batter. The top is newer than the bottom, but both have seen some use. The snare wires are most likely original. The bearing edges on the toms and bass are excellent. The snare is the only drum that gives me any concern. The drum appears to be made from boards of maple glued together and turned on a lathe, and it seems that boards either have shifted due to climate issues over the years, or the drum came from the factory with the edge just a little off where some of the seams meet. I’ve included a picture. I live in Northern Michigan, but I frequently travel downstate and through Ohio, so I might be able to meet you part way or even deliver if you live in the region–just cover gas.
