Rogers 1964 seven piece double bass set in Black Diamond Pearl. Twin 18z20″ bass drums serial #’s 44275 and 38984, twin 9×13″ ride toms serial #’s 44064 and 44065, 16×16″ serial # 44001 and 18×20″ serial # 44290 floor toms, 5×14 wood Dyna-sonic snare serial # 5278. Shells are flat gray interiors and Cleveland tags. Original McIntosh cases 2 18×20 BD, 1 18×20 and 16×16 floor tom and one 9×13 tom. Plus Protection Racket 2- 18×20 and 1-9×13 cases. Plus Kaces 16×16 and 9×13 tom cases. Bass drums include spurs and floor toms have legs. New Aquarian heads on top and mostly the bottom. New heads on the Dyna-sonic. All drums were detailed including dawn bath and shells waxed in 2015 and stored since. The left bass drum was done 9/18. These drums are probably a 9, maybe a 9.5 out of ten. This set is highly unusual because of the bass drum depths. 18X20 was not in the catalogs for bd’s or ft’s, and would have been a special order. The experts would know better, but I have never seen drums this size from that era. The mounted hardware seems to have been installed at the retailer because of the drilling through the labels in the ride toms. I also find it odd that the bass drum tags are so far apart in number. One bassdrum and all others are close in numbers. I welcome all questions and can provide further details or pictures. I would consider offers for drums and hardware. I also have an orphan 10×14 ride tom serial # 22545. It is a speckled gray interior with a Fullerton tag. I will sell it with the set for an additional cost and or may list it separately. I have owned these drums since 1985. The set was a basement find along with four other sets. She explained that he had been in the meat packing business and that drumming had been his hobby. Michael seemed a little reluctant to entertain the idea of going to see these drums. He gave me that look of, I’ve done this hundreds of times only to find nothing of value. I said c’mon maybe there is an old zildjian or two. So he agreed and the two of us went over to her house. We walked in and down to the rec room to discover five complete sets of mint condition Rogers drums. Red Onyx, Black Onyx, BDP, White Marine, and I don’t remember the last color. Hardware, cases, cymbals, and traps. Needless to say, it was one of those days I will never forget. The seven piece BDP and a Red Onyx Londoner. Both in Mint condition. Today the Red Onyx is in the possession of a fellow local collector. So who ordered this set? But being such an odd drum set, I often wondered if the set was for a promotion or clinic or something special. If that is true, then why would the retailer have installed the mounts on the bd? I have shared this story to those who listen and never found anyone that knows anything about the drums. Maybe the Covington folks would have an idea. In the early 1990’s, I played the full set out at CBGB’s and the China Club in New York with a compliment of Sonar hardware, just because I could (ha). I used the right bass drum in a three piece set up in my studio for a couple of years. Otherwise, they have been stored indoors in cases. What else can I say? I love these drums and will miss them greatly. Kidding aside, I have always wanted to get in touch with Michael to reminisce this story. For the life of me, I cannot remember his last name.
