1978 Ludwig Stainless Steel 7pc Overdrive drum set
If you like big toms, and lots of them, this is your set! This is a complete 7-piece Overdrive outfit (serial numbers are in close range to each other). This was one of the only outfits that Ludwig offered with a virgin bass drum (meaning no tom mount). Serial numbers date this set around 1978. Shells are straight, all bearing edges are true, and all heads tune up perfectly. No missing hardware or other problems. The clip mounts on the toms are straight and tight-fitting. The set is ready to be used immediately. The drums have a typical amount of cosmetic wear and tear (scuffs, scratches, tiny dents), some of which is difficult to show in photos. If you need additional photos of anything specific, let me know. The 14 tom has a non-numbered replacement badge, and a few extra holes in the shell an extra badge hole and four small extra mount holes, which are hidden by the rubber portion of the stand, when set up. The Acrolite snare is not original to the set, but dates around 1971. Includes Ludwig hard cases for the bass, floor tom, and two larger toms. The cases are in good condition. One of the tom cases has a securing strap that has been cut short. This listing is only for the drums and the drum cases – no cymbals, cymbal stands, tom stands, snare stand, throne or bass pedal. In case you are unsure of what you are looking at, briefly: Ludwig made stainless steel sets from 1976 to 1980. The most famous player of stainless sets was John Bonham, who played them starting in 1977. The shells were made from 316 stainless steel, with a welded seam, and were mirror polished. They were manufactured to very high quality standards, and dont have some of the quality issues that are sometimes seen with Vistalite drums from that era. The bearing edges have wide inverted flanges to help strengthen the drum. The drums were discontinued due to rising commodity prices at the time, which had made them too expensive to produce. No one has produced any stainless steel drum sets in any significant quantity since then. Stainless steel drums are known for having a somewhat dry tone and when played hard enough are capable of more volume than wood or plastic drums. I dont know if this set was special ordered with bottom heads, or if they were retrofitted later. Both the 18 floor tom and the virgin bass drum are considered rare, and add considerably to the value of this set. I wont sell the pieces separately.
