A one of a kind 3-piece Walberg & Auge drum set, made in 1968/69. Sizes are 8×12 rack tom, 15×14 floor tom (14 head size), and 14×22 bass drum. Like most W&A drums of this era, this kit has a mixture of different brands of hardware. The lugs and tom tension rods are classic Gretsch, as are the rail mount and diamond plate. The leg brackets on the floor tom are (non-stamped) Ludwig push-button mounts and the legs are aluminum of unknown origin. The tom rims are late 70s Yamaha replacements, and the floor tom resonant rim is a modern generic of some sort. The mufflers, spurs and spur mounts are Walberg & Auge parts, and the bass drum claws and tension rods are also Walberg & Auge but from a 1930s drum. All chrome hardware except the muffler knobs which are nickel. The shells are 6-ply, I’m assuming they’re Jasper maple/gum but it’s not clear. All three drums are signed and dated inside by the original maker at Walberg & Auge. This kit has been restored a couple of times over the years. The finish is paint and lacquer a la the Gretsch Cameo Coral finish of the 1950s and early 60s, done by hand. The rack tom had a different mount added at some point and two small hole were plugged before refinishing. The bass drum has holes for a cymbal arm mount, which I do not have and don’t know what part it should be. There are some bolts and nuts in these holes currently. There are a couple tiny nicks in the finish on the bass drum and floor tom, and old shell dents visible through the paint up close. Hardware has general minor wear and tear but has been cleaned and everything works solidly. The hoops and inlays are original to the kit, one was cracked all the way through and has been glued back together but the old crack is visible, see photos. All bearing edges are original. The tom edges are excellent and the bass drum edges have some small nicks as shown. All shells are in round and they tune up easily. For hundreds more drum parts! 14×20 bass drum, 15×14 (14 diameter) floor tom, 9×12 tom, 5×14 snare. They feature Gretsch rocket lugs and cast hoops with Ludwig Black Oyster Pearl wrap that is in excellent condition. 6-ply Gretsch shells with Aquarian modern vintage drum heads fit well except the 12 where they are pretty snug. Here are some details about each. All original with Ludwig Club Date floor tom brackets. Earlier Gretsch shell with silver interior. I assume it was re-dated when this kit was assembled in 1969. W&A triple flanged hoops and functioning strainer. Hardware shows some signs of oxidation on chrome. Sticker badge instead of Aluminum badge like on the other drums. Roger’s tom mount installed at some point that was removed in favor of the original rail mount. The holes were expertly filled and matched with period-correct, matching Ludwig Black Oyster wrap segments. The pattern was aligned through the old holes so that it blends very well with the surrounding wrap on the drum. From more than a couple of feet away, it is near-impossible to spot. Gretsch mufflers, W&A cymbal tilters and W&A hoop anchor are included although only one of the tilters has the cymbal arm to attach. Hoops have been re-painted and original inlay is complete and tight. These are in great condition and have preserved well through the years. There are signs of their age however, so it should not be expected these will look as perfect as a new set of drums. This is a vintage 1914 Walberg & Auge Drum outfit – 16 x 27.5 bass drum, 6 x 14 snare drum, pedal (no snare stand). 1914 original bill of sale… 16 x 27.5 bass drum with original calf heads. 14 single tension rods. Ludwig clamp on spurs. Perfection Universal bass drum pedal with cymbal striker attachment. Perfection Booster Snare Drum #1. Description is from the W&A 1917 Catalog (see last photo). Drum looks to be original. 6 x 14 maple shell with re-rings, black exterior and interior, 16 lug, tension strainer with throw off lever at bottom. Butt plate is the W&A Perfection slide in for quick removal. All t rods, strainer, and throw off function perfectly and smoothly. All original calf heads fit and tune with no issues. A few minor chips to the paint on the hoops. The top hoop has 2 small holes, most likely for clip or some kind of strap, and 2 tiny pin holes (where you normally see a small W&A hoop badge) The vented shell produces a dry and articulate sound. No 2 Walberg and Auge Perfection sets from the late 60s to early 70s seem to be the same. This 9×13-9×13-16×16-8lug 14×22 beauty has Gretsch lugs, Ludwig spring loaded floor tom legs, Rogers hoops and rods, and prototype mufflers, finished in Gretsch pink champagne sparkle. To boot, the rack toms and kick are Gretsch 6 ply shells with silver sealer. The floor tom is Rogers formula, 5 ply with 5 ply rings, but finished with silver sealer with an outside roundover and inside 30 degree Gretsch/Rogers hybrid style bearing edge. Overall the kit presents extremely well with the following marks, a bit of rash on the top left of the kick from the rack tom, a few very hard to see scuffs to the rack toms, and a few scratches and scuffs to the floor tom, a small bubble to the seam of the floor tom, no lifting, but not flat. One owner out of Mass – this set looks So good you don’t even have to play to appreciate the quality. The measurements for the Walberg & Auge set are: 17″ x 23″. 16 1/2″ x 17″ & 9 3/4″ x 14″. The Leedy Snare measures 7 1/8″ x 14 1/2″. The cymbals are Early Ludwig Standard Shooting Star 15 Swiss made Pastes. The heavy stand is a Remo Dynamax. Cool hand made wooden carrying case made specially for the Leedy. Condition is extra fine with slight wear to finish on the wooden edges of the Bass. Heads are Remo Weather Kings in great shape, the Leedy clear Remo has pulled away from edge a bit.
